The College of General Studies

The University of Pennsylvania (known informally as Penn) welcomes international students. Penn is a wonderful place to experience American culture. Located in one of America's oldest and largest cities - the home of our country's birth - Penn is consistently ranked among the best universities in the United States.

Guest Student Program

Highly qualified students from abroad take up to one academic year of full-time undergraduate coursework and English language study in Penn's School of Arts and Sciences as non-matriculated undergraduates.

Summer Sessions

Penn's Summer Sessions provide some of the most comprehensive and academically stimulating credit and non-credit course offerings in the United States. Class sizes are small during the summer months, and most classes are discussion-based. Students have many opportunities to participate in American culture; to study and make friends with academically talented students; and to enjoy the many intellectual, social, and cultural experiences available in Philadelphia.

Students take courses with Penn students, earn college credits that can be transferred to other universities, and receive an official transcript from the University of Pennsylvania. International students can take a combination of intensive English and one or two summer session courses through the English Plus (E+) program.

Summer High School Programs

For the past decade, students from the United States and around the world have had their first taste of college life through summer experiences at the University of Pennsylvania. Students about to start their third or fourth year of secondary school can experience an outstanding academic challenge in an Ivy League environment. The programs, built around courses taught by Penn faculty members, scholars, and distinguished outside experts, include the Science Academy, the Art & Architecture Studios, the Theatre Workshop, and the Pre-College Program.

Degree Programs

Bachelor of Arts

Academically qualified students over the age of 21 fulfill the same degree requirements and earn the same undergraduate degree as full-time residential students.

Graduate Programs

Master of Applied Positive Psychology
The MAPP is for psychologists, educators, life coaches, and other professionals interested in the application of a psychology that focuses on the empirical study of positive emotions, strengths-based character, and healthy institutions. The program trains students in the history, theory, and research methods of Positive Psychology and helps them to apply the concepts and techniques in their professional settings.

Master of Medical Physics
The MMP degree meets the academic and career interests of technically prepared college graduates who seek to combine their interests in graduate physics with growing career opportunities in medical fields such as Radiation Oncology, Radiology and Nuclear Medicine.

Master of Science in Applied Geosciences
The MSAG program is an intensive 12-course master's degree program which provides preparation for career advancement in the geosciences and the academic foundation for licensure as a Professional Geologists.

Master of Environmental Studies
The MES is an intensive 12-course master's degree program that brings together researchers and practitioners in the physical, biological and social sciences, economics, and other arts and sciences disciplines with professionals in planning, health care, and the law to address environmental problems.

Master of Liberal Arts
The MLA offers students the opportunity to explore the liberal arts from the perspective of their own interests and without the limits of a specific discipline.

Master of Urban Spatial Analytics
The MUSA degree provides students with spatial technology training and an understanding of the urban context for which these techniques can be used to improve public and private decision-making.

Post-Baccalaureate Programs

Students who have already earned a bachelor's degree can take undergraduate courses, whether to satisfy prerequisites for graduate or professional programs or to satisfy their curiosity. Other Post-Baccalaureate programs include the Pre-Health and Special Science Programs and Classical Studies.

The University of Pennsylvania:

Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Museum of Art, jazz clubs and professional sports teams are a few of the attractions you will find in the city. Conveniently located on the East Coast between New York and Washington, D.C., Philadelphia is also within easy travel distance to Boston, Baltimore, and the Atlantic Ocean beaches.
