English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

Reinforces skills that prepare you for the classroom, including:
  • Note taking & report writing
  • Scanning, and search reading
  • Presentation skills
  • Participation in tutorials and seminars

English for Specific Purposes (ESP)

  • Provides language study specific to an individual discipline
  • English for Business, English for Information Technology, English for Law
  • Courses are tailored for groups or individual needs

University Link Program (fall and spring only)

  • Advanced level of English required
  • Students enroll in an SU academic course
  • English instruction supports the academic course
  • Provides a transition from English language study to discipline-specific courses

Proficiency Levels:

Students are placed into the level that provides for maximum improvement in communication skills

Level 1 Beginner
Level 2 Elementary proficiency
Level 3 Intermediate proficiency
Level 4 Partial academic proficiency
Level 5 Academic proficiency

Admission Requirements:

  • ELI students must be at least 17 years old and have completed secondary education.
  • Must be admitted or conditionally admitted to a U.S. university OR be able to document a reason for studying English.
  • Must provide completed, signed application form; transcript of previous education; proof of ability to fund ELI study; valid passport; non-refundable money order for application fee and tuition deposit.
  • Accepted students will receive an I-20, Certificate of Eligibility.
  • PLEASE NOTE: Admission to the English Language Institute does not constitute admission to Syracuse University.

Calendar and Fees

Fall 2008 Semester: August 25-December 12
Spring 2009 Semester: January 12-May 1

Each semester includes 20 hours of instruction per week plus conversation groups and lab work.

Cost per semester:
Tuition: $5,240
Application Fee: $60 (Nonrefundable)
Tuition Deposit: $400 (Nonrefundable)
Campus Housing: $2,510 - 3,550*
Campus Meal Plan: $2,770 - 2,970
Incidentals (books, health insurance, etc.): $1,260
Student Activity Fee: $286.00

*Dormitory selection requires meal plan; apartment selection does not.

Summer 2008:

May 19-June 27
July 30-August 8

Two six-week programs include 30 hours of instruction plus lab work.

Cost per 4-week program:
Tuition: $3,220
Application Fee: $60 (Nonrefundable)
Tuition Deposit: $400 (Nonrefundable)
Campus Housing: $769 - 977*
Campus Meal Plan: $926 - 995*
Incidentals (books, health insurance, etc.): $630
