The feeling of friendship that defines the campus extends to Moscow, the university's "hometown." This thriving, safe community of more than 20,000 people is located in the northern part of the state about 90 miles southeast of Spokane, Washington.Moscow, the gateway to a natural wonderland, with the surrounding Palouse hills and mountains and lakes of northern Idaho, provides a scenic background for university facilities. Skiing, boating, hiking, and many outdoor recreation resources are within easy driving distance. Cultural activities, such as theatre and concerts, abound in Moscow throughout the year. An ice rink, a first-class student recreation center, and a public outdoor pool present further opportunities for vigorous exercise or relaxation. The University of Idaho, having granted nearly 90,000 degrees since its founding, is a place where the pursuit of excellence is an ongoing passion.Intensive English Language ProgramThe American Language and Culture Program (ALCP) offers students the opportunity to improve their English language skills in a supportive, friendly environment. ALCP schedules five eight-week sessions each year with 20 hours per week of required language instruction in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar. A four-week summer program and other special programs are also available. Six levels, beginning to advanced, are separated into small classes. ALCP offers computer laboratories with free e-mail and internet access. The University of Idaho athletic facilities and library are available to intensive English language students. Passing Level 5 in ALCP substitutes for a 525 (paper), 193 (CBT), or 69-70 (iBT) TOEFL score for undergraduate and graduate admission to the University of Idaho. Students who meet the Ul's academic requirements, but have not met the English proficiency requirement, may be admitted in "deferred admission" status. Students in deferred admission status in ALCP's level 5 may obtain approval to enroll part-time in academic classes through "concurrent enrollment." Course credit applies to the student's degree once full admission is granted. Cultural activities are scheduled throughout each eight-week session, and conversation partners are assigned upon request for two hours per week.Admission to Academic Degree ProgramsInternational exchange students who are attending a U.S. high school and wish to apply to UI must have a high school diploma. Undergraduate students must have at least a 2.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) from a secondary school. Transfer students must have a 2.0 GPA. All applicants must have an official TOEFL score (not more than two years old) of 525 (paper), 193 (CBT), or 69-70 (iBT) minimum. Most graduate programs require a score of 550/213/79-80 or higher, and some may require a GRE or GMAT exam. Successful completion of Level 5 in UI's intensive English program (ALCP), substitutes for the minimum TOEFL requirement. The Ul's online application lists other tests of English proficiency that can also be accepted.TOEFL is not required if the applicant's native country is Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or one of the English-speaking Caribbean Islands. A waiver of the TOEFL is automatically granted to students from countries where English is the native language and/or the official language for academic instruction. Those countries are listed at http://www.students.uidaho.edu/admissions/international. Questions? If you have questions or would like to request information, please contact us!
