The English Language Center (ELC) helps students from all over the world become confident communicators with exceptional Intensive English, Academic Preparation and Professional Training programs. Courses are offered on-campus and online, providing the student with flexible learning opportunities. A team of dedicated, friendly staff provide a wide range of support services to assist students.

Program Offerings:

  • Intensive English Program (IEP) - (Introductory to Intermediate). Multi-level language program providing training in the core English skills with additional instruction in specialized communication skills. This program is open to students and professionals.

    Program includes 20 hours of instruction per week in classes of 10-18 students plus language lab instruction and tutoring.

    Students are eligible to apply for conditional admission to undergraduate programs without taking the TOEFL exam after successful completion of Level 4 (high-intermediate) courses.

  • Advanced English Courses - (High-intermediate to advanced level). Advanced level courses ideally suited for individuals interested in enhancing English language skills for academic or professional purposes.

  • TOEFL Preparation Course - (High-intermediate to advanced level). Preparation course for both the new Internet-based (iBT) and the computer-based (CBT) tests. Coursework includes English language skills review, test-taking strategies and practice sample tests.

  • Teacher Training Program - Aspiring and practicing teachers can select between credit and non-credit program options for enhancing their ESOL teaching skills; many courses are offered online.

  • Customized English Training - The ELC has expertise and experience in developing customized English language training for professionals in Education, Medical Research, Health Care Administration, Business Management and Information Technology fields.

Schedule

Intensive English Program (IEP)

The IEP classes begin five times a year. Completion of each level takes 2 sessions (4 months). Students may enroll at the beginning of any session.

Fall I: September-October
Fall II: Late October-December
Spring I: Late January-Early March
Spring II: Late March-May
Summer: Late May-July*

*Summer semester is equal to two sessions. Students have 35 hours of instruction per week for eight weeks.

Advanced Academic English Courses

These courses are offered during academic semesters (4 months). Students may enroll in these courses for the Fall I, Spring I or Summer semester.

Program Costs

The approximate tuition and fees for one full semester (two sessions) of the Intensive English Program is $4,000. As an additional fee, all F-1 students are required to enroll in UMBC health insurance. Other costs would include housing, meals and books.

Our Faculty

All courses are taught by highly experienced faculty, who hold advanced degrees in English as a Second Language and Applied Linguistics. They bring to the classroom years of teaching experience within the U.S. and abroad.
